What a wonderful article on Pepi! Thank you Allen.
I hope you don't mind that I added your picture of Pepi and a link to this blog on my Pepi Lederer tribute page on myspace.
I was quite ill during her birthday and it slipped my mind! How terrible!

Dear Mr. Ellenberger:

It was good of you to honor Pepi Lederer's 100th birthday---which would've slipped right passed me, if you hadn't. Also good of you to credit my "Louise Brooks" biography.

One small correction: the great "dykes and pansies" quote (from p. 237 of the bio)should be attributed to Louise, not her brother. It was contained in a long letter she wrote on Feb. 12, 1976 to Theo, who was my close friend & mentor at the Wichita Eagle in Kansas---and one of the funniest men in the universe.

I'm sure you've seen the fabulous photo of L. & T. with the tennis balls in Bev. Hills in 1928 (in "Lulu in H'wd" &; my book, p. 490). But I bet most of your readers/bloggers have not. You oughtta re-print it for them---if you want, I hereby give you the rights.

Theodore was a legendary & superb tennis player into his late 60s, but his finest moment on the court came in Kansas, when the newspaper's sports editor Jack Copeland challenged him (in print) to a match. Theo accepted, saying he could beat Copeland (a good player himself) with a FRYING PAN instead of a racket. At the annointed or is it appointed? hour & location, a considerable crowd showed up to watch him do just that.

Thank you Mr. Paris, I will make make that correction and thank you for the back story on Louise's brother, Theodore. I am aware of the photo and will try to reprint it soon.

Wonderful story, Allan! I've learned so much more about Pepi in just this one article. Btw, in the shot of the Douras mausoleum, does that temporary marker outside belong to anyone family-related?

Thanks Jim. No thats been there for a while. They recently put the permanent marker in and never removed it. they are no family.

Another stellar article, Allan! I was always fascinated by the story of Pepi, but never enough to investigate more fully her life and death. Thank you for doing it for us all. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, PEPI LEDERER!
