LOS ANGELES (AP) — Marie Osmond’s 18-year-old son Michael Blosil has died, the entertainer said Saturday.

Osmond said in a statement through her publicist that her family is devastated by the “tragic loss.” She did not provide details on the death.

Entertainment Tonight reported on its Web site that Blosil jumped to his death Friday night from a downtown Los Angeles apartment building.

Officers responded to an apparent suicide jump in the area, but the victim was not identified Saturday, Los Angeles Police Officer Gregory Baek said.

“My family and I are devastated and in deep shock by the tragic loss of our dear Michael and ask that everyone respect our privacy during this difficult time,” Osmond said in the statement.

Blosil reportedly left a note which referred to a lifelong battle with depression.

In 2007, Osmond said Michael was treated at a rehabilitation facility, but she didn’t disclose the nature of his problem.

Donny Osmond, Blosil’s uncle, told Entertainment Tonight: “Please pray for my sister and her family.”

Michael is one of Osmond’s five adopted children. She also has three other children from two marriages. She divorced Brian Blosil in 2007 after two decades of marriage. She and her first husband Stephen Craig divorced in 1985.

Osmond earned fame at age 13 with the hit song “Paper Roses,” and starred with her brother, Donny, on television’s “Donny and Marie Show” during the 1970s.

They perform a musical variety show regularly at the Flamingo Las Vegas Hotel and Casino. The hotel said Saturday’s performance was canceled.

Apolo Anton Ohno adds to medal haul

After being disqualified in men’s 500-meter final, he wins bronze as part of the 5,000-meter relay team

At the end, and this may be the very end, Apolo Anton Ohno circled the Pacific Coliseum ice with a smile, tears welling and an unprecedented eighth Winter Olympics medal secured.

It just took a few minutes longer than expected. He’d had No. 8 in hand after the men’s 500-meter race earlier Friday evening, but he’d also had that hand on the hip of a competitor on the last turn of that race. That got him disqualified, leaving only the chaotic 5,000-meter relay to add to the stack of hardware he’d accrued.

So Ohno anchored the U.S. team in that race and drove it to a bronze medal, likely capping his decorated Olympic career with a third medal of these Winter Games, even if he wasn’t entirely happy with how it occurred.

BREAKING NEWS

Search Continues for Abducted 3-Year-Old

Briant-Rodriguez

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) – Federal and local authorities kept up their search Tuesday for the 3-year-old boy snatched from his home by armed robbers who threatened to kill him.

The gunmen burst through the family’s front door Sunday and tied up 3-year-old Briant Rodriguez, four of his siblings and their mother, Maria Rosalina Millan, then ransacked the house, stealing money and other property, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said.

Briant Rodriguez kidnappers

After about 20 minutes, the men left with Briant, ordering his mother and the other children not to call police, the department said in a statement.

“They grabbed my kid, told me ‘I’m going to take the kid to Mexico and I’m going to kill him,”‘ the distraught Millan said in Spanish to reporters gathered in her front yard Monday night. “I said ‘Why? Don’t take my kid,’ and he told me to ‘turn around, I’m going to shoot you. Stop talking.”‘

The motive for the abduction was unknown.

“There has been no demand for ransom, there has been no contact with the family,” sheriff’s spokeswoman Jodi Miller said Monday.

Miller said authorities along the Mexican border had been put on alert, and FBI investigators were helping in the investigation.

“It’s horrifying,” sheriff’s Lt. Rick Ells said. “I don’t think I could impress on you how rare a kidnapping like this is.”

Briant’s older brother said the men tried to steal the family car.

“Our keys were inside our car, cause we were about to leave,” 14-year-old Benjamin Barasa told a local television news station. “So they couldn’t find them, so they got mad. They took my little brother. He didn’t know what was happening so he wasn’t crying.”

One of the children — an 8-year-old boy — wiggled free from his ties and freed the rest of the family, authorities said.

Briant is the youngest of Millan’s seven children.

Her 16-year-old son was not home and another adult child does not live at home.

The boy’s father was at work at the time and the initial investigation pointed to the kidnappers being strangers to the family, Ells said.

The gunmen stole Millan’s cell phone, so she had to make the emergency call from a nearby liquor store, Ells said.

No witnesses saw the men’s vehicle.

The family lives in a modest, single-story home in a mainly lower-income area abutting the city of San Bernardino, about 60 miles east of Los Angeles.

Anyone with information about this case was urged to Sergeant Doug Hubbard or Detective Jon Minard with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department at (909) 387-3589.
