SALISBURY, Conn. (AP) — Actor Elmore “Rip” Torn has been charged with breaking into a Connecticut bank and carrying a loaded handgun while intoxicated.

State police say the 78-year-old Salisbury resident was arrested Friday night after police found him inside the Litchfield Bancorp with a loaded revolver.

The “Men in Black” actor has been taken into custody and booked on charges including burglary and possession of firearm without a permit. He is being held on $100,000 bond and is scheduled for a Monday appearance in Bantam Superior Court.

Last year, Torn was given probation in a Connecticut drunken driving case and granted permission to enter an alcohol education program. He also has two previous drunken driving arrests in New York.

A spokesman for Torn did not immediately return phone calls Saturday.

Actress Luise Rainer on the glamour and grit of Hollywood’s golden era

As she approaches her 100th birthday, the two-time Oscar winner talks to Mick Brown about Hollywood, Greta Garbo, and charming Albert Einstein.

The two Academy Awards that Luise Rainer won for best actress stand on a bookshelf in her study. Actually, that’s not quite true. The Oscar that Rainer won for The Great Ziegfeld in 1936 is the original – a deep and satisfyingly aged bronze. The Oscar that she won the following year for her role in The Good Earth she gave to the removal men who moved her from Switzerland to London some years ago. “I used it as a doorstop,” Rainer says airily. “And it was bent.”

The shiny gild statuette that now stands on her shelf is a recent replacement.

Meredith Baxter says she’s gay

Alternative Film Guide ( www.altfg.com )

On the day the New York senate decides that gays don’t deserve the right to marry, Meredith Baxter, best known for the 1980s television series Family Ties, has stated in print, television, and radio that “yes, I’m a lesbian.”

The 62-year-old Baxter (born in the Los Angeles suburb of South Pasadena on June 21, 1947), who has been married three times and has five children, is currently in a relationship with building contractor Nancy Locke. The couple have been together for four years. Baxter says she began dating women seven years ago. (The IMDb implies that it’s the same Nancy Locke that was once married to Wings Hauser; but that is apparently a case of mistaken identity.) …

Report: Jessica Lange falls in Minn. cabin, goes to hospital

A month shy of her 60th birthday, Minnesota-born actress Jessica Lange reportedly took a tumble at her cabin near the town where she was born and suffered a host of injuries.

According to the gossip website tmz.com, Lange grabbed for a railing that was not secure and fell, breaking her shoulder and collarbone and dislocating her arm. She also suffered cuts and needed stitches at a nearby hospital, the website said. TMZ did not report when the fall occurred.

In recent months, she and longtime mate Sam Shepard sold their home in Stillwater.

A representative for Lange told People magazine, “She will be completely fine and expects to be released from the hospital imminently.”

In a 2004 interview with AARP magazine, Lange said of her cabin, south of Cloquet: “”There is no place I’d rather be. The cabin is in the deep woods, on a hill overlooking a small lake.

“There is no sound except nature, which can be amazingly loud when you really listen. We can hear coyote, timber wolves, bear. I get up at 6:30 a.m., take my coffee, and sit on the dock and watch the hawks, eagles, loons, and blue heron.”

NEW YORK – Bart Simpson is known for prank calls, but Nancy Cartwright, who provides Bart’s voice on the U.S. version of “The Simpsons,” has been heard this week in a phone message using the voice of the cartoon boy to promote Scientology.

Cartwright, long a member of the church, recorded her 60-second robocall to boost attendance at a Scientology event scheduled for Saturday.

Although she identifies herself, much of the spiel is delivered in Bart’s voice, wrapping up with, “See you there, man!”

The Fox network would not comment, but “Simpsons” executive producer Al Jean said the message wasn’t authorized by the show, which has never “endorsed any religion, philosophy or system of beliefs any more profound than Butterfinger bars” candy.

Gene Roddenberry, wife to spend eternity in space

January 27, 2009

LOS ANGELES — The creator of “Star Trek” and his wife will spend eternity together in space. Celestis Inc., a company that specializes in “memorial spaceflights,” said Monday that it will ship the remains of Gene Roddenberry and Majel Barrett Roddenberry into space next year.

The couple’s cremated remains will be sealed into specially made capsules designed to withstand the rigors of space travel. A rocket-launched spacecraft will carry the capsules, along with digitized tributes from fans. The Roddenberrys’ remains _ and the spacecraft _ will travel ever deeper into space and will not return to earth, company spokeswoman Susan Schonfeld said.

After Gene Roddenberry died in 1991, his wife commissioned Celestis to launch a part of his remains into space in 1997. She died Dec. 18, 2008.
